Roundabout to Move Forward

Last night local residents gathered at a public meeting to give input about a new roundabout project at 17th and Albany. The project is mainly being done with federal funding but also required a match of $160,000. The match, with the exception of $15,000, was paid for in 2008 and 2009.

Rob McNevin, President of the Beech Grove Redevelopment Commission, says the project has been going on since 2008."The project did not go forward for the longest time because there wasn't enough funding for the match so it sat there," McNevin says.McNevin says the money has been found and the purpose of the public meeting was to gather opinions on the project. He says there were some safety concerns with the new roundabout.

The room was packed last night at the crowd expressed their concerns with the project. One of the safety concerns was the school children walking home. The children now are walking across 4 and in some spots 5 lanes of traffic. After the roundabout is finished, they will be only walking over 2 lanes of traffic and they have a standing area in between the two which means they have to only worry about 1 lane of traffic at a time.

Another area of concern was the cost. The cost for the city was $160,000 total. This money has already been paid and if we were to deny this project to move forward we have nothing to show for that money. Also, if we were to deny the grant money, we might lose future grants for other projects. Which means the city would have to pay for the full amount instead of just a match.

Construction is expected to begin in June and will last about 90 days with 45 of those days requiring the intersection to be completely closed to traffic.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop a comment and we will do our best to get you that info from a person directly involved.

Democrats Face Fines Today!

Indiana House Democrats stalemate stretched into its third week. Democrats fled to Illinois 14 days ago in protest of bills in the Legislature that they consider anti-education and anti-labor.
Absent Democrats will be fined beginning Monday for each day they stay away from Indianapolis.

GOP House Speaker Brian Bosma said that as of 1:30 p.m., absent Democrats will be fined $250 a day, in addition to the $155 daily expense allowance that is now being withheld. Democrats' absence is denying the House to conduct business, keeping legislation from moving through the chamber. Republicans hold a large enough majority in the Senate that if Democrats in that chamber didn't show up, business could still be conducted.

House Democrats said they want to work out compromises on some of the GOP proposals. Bosma said that Democratic amendments to education and labor proposals would be considered, but that he won't cut a backroom deal or agree to drop proposals outright to get Democrats back.
Assuming 35 Democrats continue to avoid attending, it would add up to $8,750 a day, in total. Such fines have been threatened in previous House walkouts over the years, but have been waived when the minority party returns.

BG MAYOR ANNOUNCES $124,000 IN ANNUAL TAXPAYER SAVINGS

Mayor Terry Dilk is streamlining his office to save Beech Grove taxpayers $124,000 per year.

Mayor Dilk commented on the savings: “My administration is setting an example of efficiency and conservative government. We have to live within our means.”

The Mayor will spend no money on communications consultants, forego an already budgeted, dedicated secretary, and will not retain an aide employed by the former mayor.

With last week’s appointment of a Communications Director/Mayor’s Chief of Staff, the Mayor’s Office is reduced to a staff of one from a staff of three – two full-time employees and a communications consultant paid at $78 per hour.

The new Communications Director/Mayor’s Chief of Staff will report directly to the Mayor and will manage the day-to-day administrative tasks of the office, serve as city spokesperson, and direct communications. He will be an adviser and representative of the Mayor’s Office, but the position has no direct authority over city employees.

------
OLD MAYOR’S OFFICE
Position - Cost Per Year
Communications Consultant $69,429.16*
Secretary $48,670
Legal Aide $42,790

TOTAL $160,889.16

MAYOR DILK’S OFFICE
Position - Cost Per Year
Communications Director & COS $36,400

TOTAL $36,400

SAVINGS $124,489.16

*Over the previous four years (2007-2010), the City of Beech Grove and Redevelopment Commission spent $277,716.67 on communications consulting. The amounts per year are: 2007 - $59,800.56, 2008 - $126,422.11, 2009 - $83,128.50, 2010 - $8,365.50. $69,429.16 is the yearly average used in the above calculation.

We Must Remember Officer David Moore!!

Officer David Moore was shot during a routine traffic stop on Sunday morning. It is important to remember our fallen heroes that serve our community. Moore was a great guy that loved his job. Officer Moore, 29, joined the police force in 2004 and was credited for being one of those guys that always had your back.

With Officer Moore's death comes as a reminder of our own Officer in Beech Grove that made the ultimate sacrifice. On September 29, 2000 Beech Grove Police Officer William "Bill" Toney was fatally wounded in a foot chase from a fleeing suspect.

We must never forget these brave heroes!!!

Beech Grove Has a New Mayor!!

Precinct Committeemen met last night to elect the new Mayor Of the City of Beech Grove. Terry Dilk was named Mayor. Congratulations to Terry and we wish him the best as he assumes this new role with new challenges.

What do you think about President Obama's Stae of the Union??

President Obama delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night. In his speech he calls for a spending freeze over the next 5 years. Republicans commented that he will have to do a lot better than a freeze to tackle the massive debt. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a leading Senate conservative, said, "When you're in a car recklessly speeding toward a cliff, you don't hit cruise control," he said. "You slam on the brakes and reverse course."

Republicans and the country wants to see big cuts in the budget as suggested by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. Sen Paul proposal would cut $500 billion in 1 year.

"We're continuing to spend at a deficit level, so if we do that for the next five years, we'll continue to add to our debt," Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D.

Just hours before the speech, the GOP-led House voted 256-165 to cut the federal budget by returning domestic agencies to 2008 budget levels in place before Obama became president.
The resolution is non-binding, but it marks the beginning of a budget fight between House Republicans and the White House and Democrats who control the Senate.

What did you think of his speech??

Mitch Daniels - Education #1 Priority

Last night, Governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels (R), expressed the need for education reform in our state. He spoke of charter schools expansion, merit pay for teachers and the elimination of township government. His plan calls for rewarding teachers based on student performance and not based on how many years they have been teaching. He also said, one in three Hoosier children can pass the national math or reading exam and 99 percent of Indiana teachers are rated "effective." "If that were true 99 percent, not one-third, of our students would be passing those national tests." Daniels went on to say, families who can't find the right public or charter public school should be able to apply state dollars toward "the non-government school of their choice."

The speech wasn't entirely about education, though. He told the General Assembly to pass a balanced two-year budget without tax increases or "gimmicks." He called for an automatic taxpayer refund. Daniels also advocated for several local government reforms he has promoted in the past. They include the elimination of township governments and restrictions on "double-dipping" government workers who also sit on city and county councils. He also said Indiana's three-member county commissioner structure should be consolidated into a single executive.

Democrats criticized Daniels on his plan calling it "a distraction," but thankfully this year it will be hard for the democrats to stall as the Republicans hold the majority in both the house and senate.

Terry Dilk Lays Out Platform

Last night at the Beech Grove Republican Club Meeting, Terry Dilk, Candidate for Beech Grove Mayor, laid out some goals he would achieve if he were elected Mayor. Terry stressed fiscal responsibility and restraint. A few of his goals include preserving Beech Grove City services, decreasing and eliminating the use of Tax anticipation warrants, avoiding layoffs and completing the Main Street Revitalization Project. "The City needs to determine what the revenues will be and spend within those limits, not decide what we want to spend and borrow to make it happen." said Dilk. Dilk also said federal funding has been allocated for the Main Street project and is awaiting a funding match by the city.
